Week 12 – Season 4 curtain close

Quite a good week for me this week – managed to squeeze in a race in three different series.

Skip Barber – Infineon IRL
Joined the strongest grid I’ve ever raced (SOF was 3447!) and basically set about not coming last! Had a good, fun, race with some close dicing at points and finished 7th out of 10th which I was actually very satisfied with. The winner took 215 points!

Chevy Silverado – Lowe’s
Needing to complete my fourth official race in season 4 (in order to qualify for the oval B licence) I joined a Lowe’s race early in the week. So far all the truck races have been exhilerating – the immersion is like nothing else in iRacing. The races are harder and more strenous than anything else I’ve raced and I was genuinely scared at several moments in the race! Unfortunately I had a few incidents here, one 4x that was my fault and another when I could not avoid a crash ahead. Finished 7th of 14 though in a strong field and scored 109 points. My B licence is sorted!

Late Model – Stafford
Ugh. Had a setup that was horrendously slow to the top times and could not get close to the pace (was almost 1 second off the times), but went into a race anyway as I had only seven scoring weeks at this point. Had a safe but ultimately forgettable race and finished 4th out of 11, taking 65 points.

So all in all a good week of racing – 3 good races and 2 were incident free. Currently sitting on dual 4.99 C licences (partly due to the clean races, partly due to the recent rating changes by iRating to make it easier) but I’m looking forward to seeing how they convert to B licence values.

We enter week 13 next week and welcome the two new A level cars to the service – can’t wait!

Week 4 – Skippy @ Lime Rock?

This week had the Skip Barber series racing at Lime Rock Park, and after a bit of thought I decided that I would pass on this weeks action. It’s not that I really hate the track – more that I really hate lapping it again and again for long periods of time. The same corners come around every 60 seconds and it becomes such a chore!

Instead I took the opportunity to look to the C licenced series of the trucks and mazdas (have to get four races in each car during this season to get promoted to B licence).

First up is a cool race I had in the Star Mazda at Infineon Long. I made the first mistake of jumping into a qualifying session without a lot of time on the setup that I had loaded and soon found that this should never, ever be done! A bad setup in the Mazda can be pretty lethal!

I soon got to a consistent, if slow, pace and went into a strong race field. Had a really good race through the field and had a memorable battle for what was effectively sixth place. This is a video of some of the action – it’s a bit long but nevermind.

The rest of the race was spent defending my position so the race had a nice two sided feel to it.

On the oval side I had a blast racing at trucks at Bristol – such an awesome track. Pitting strategy is really welcome and livens up racing nicely, plus there weren’t too many yellows either. I also raced the late model at Milwaukee which was a good combination too – took 97 points home, which is a nice bump over what I usually get.

Next week we have the Skip Barber car at Lowe’s full road course – can’t wait for that!

Week 1 – Here we go again…

So here we go again, another new season, and a new outlook to racing. The oval crowd is going crazy over the trucks at Daytona (simply awesome from the practice sessions I’ve tried), and the general participation seems much higher. More entrants for all available sessions and generally a better vibe around the community, which is great.

I spent the first part of the week getting reacquainted with the Skip Barber. I want to create my own setups so first I had some reading to do. This time we get basic ride height and rear anti-roll bar adjustment to deal with. Oddly, we lose some wheel settings (caster, camber, toe) from the Solstice, but at least it makes it easy to setup the car.

Once I read up on the settings they seem pretty straightforward. There is not a huge difference in the setup, and each click in one setting or other is a tiny handling change. I’ve found the ARB is a big adjustor, along with tyre pressures. Ride height is a more subtle, but welcome setup parameter.

When I started entering races I had a blast! Infineon is a really great track, varied and interesting with a wonderful flow. I had a few good results and one peach of a result, which I edited and fraps’d.

I had a good start and made it up to 4th early on. Then I had a really intense sequence of laps behind a slightly slower car that I just could not pass. I was making sure to not slip up, so was possibly holding something in reserve but I was faster EVERYWHERE on the track apart from the two major passing areas! Eventually the leaders dropped or spun out and I found myself in a battle for the win. Finally a solid pass was made and I took my first Skippy win, and took my highest points haul to boot (167 points!). My best iRacing race yet!

I have two videos this week, this one is a small collection of random highlights from my races this week (passes, spins, etc).

To round off the week I did pop into some late model races at the tail end of the week but I was hampered by running the default setup (which isn’t great) so I just had two pretty boring races, for 73 points each. I really want to learn how to setup a late model soon….
